The Functioning of the Thermostats for Home Heating and Air Conditioning

The components of a controlling system that measure the temperature and allow the heating installation to turn on and off when a certain temperature is reached are known as thermostats for home heating.

Types of Thermostats and the Differences between Them

There are digital and non-digital thermostats, and the difference between them does not relate to their functioning, but rather with their display and programming.

As you can probably imagine, the most popular are the digital thermostats. They come in a variety of shapes and models, but their purpose is the same: controlling the temperature in the house or on the installation.

Of course, there are some small differences between the thermostats for home heating, like the fact that some are programmable and some are non-programmable or that some can be controlled from a distance, using a remote control, while others require local intervention, like rotating or pressing a button. Although the purpose is the same, some models are more comfortable and efficient to use than others.

How to Install Thermostats for Home Heating

No matter if we are talking about a thermostat with mercury or a mechanical contact, digital or electronically programmable, the installation is the same, requiring little time and effort, as well as no particular skills or experience, on the condition that the manufacturer’s recommendations be followed to the letter. Here are the steps to be followed:

1. Removing the old thermostats for home heating

- Shut off the power to the furnace;
- Remove the old device and expose the wires;
- Taking photo or making a sketch of the way the wires are connected to the thermostat to be replaced, to make sure that they are reconnected based on the same pattern;
- Disconnecting the wires carefully, to prevent their falling into the wall;
- If you cannot tell them apart by colors, label the wires according to the terminals they should be connected to;
- Remove the mounting plate of the old thermostat from the wall.

2. Installing the new plate

- Pull the wiring through the hole in the mounting plate;
- Set the mounting plate against the wall, in such a way as to pull the wires through the wall and through the hole of the mounting plate without binding;
- Adjust the mounting plate in order to mark the two wall holes and fasten it.
- Install the screws on the mounting plate.

3. Connecting the wires

- Match the colors of the wires with the corresponding terminal connections, using the photo or the sketch for reference;
- Once the wires are connected, push the excess wires into the wall.

4. Connect the cover of the new thermostat

- Attach the thermostat to the mounting plate, making sure that the electrical connections fit in position;
- Turn the circuit powering the furnace back on;
- Adjust the settings of the thermostat.

It is as simple as that. No need of specialists or any special equipment. The thermostat for home heating can be installed by anyone with the right information and patience to follow it.
